proper humidity levels inside your home are critical where health and comfort are concerened.

both high and low humidity can cause big problems, but before we can really address the problems, it helps to understand the issue. Check out this video from Aprilaire.

so what is the right level and what can happen if you have too much or too little?

for most of us, the ideal range is somewhere between 40% – 50%

as you can see from the chart, when the humidity raises above 60% and lowers below 30%, our health in the home becomes at risk.

living in missouri, we get to experience hot humid summer…

…and cold dry winters.

let's take a look at summer

The most common issues we see in our homes are;

  • increased growth of fungi, bateria, viruses, and dust mites.
  • musty odors.
  • reduced efficiency from the air conditioner.
  • excessive condensation on windows.
  • damage to your homes flooring, foundation, or other structural parts.
  • doors and windows swell causing them to stick.

while it’s true that every air conditioning system is designed to remove heat and moisture from the air, the extremes we see in our region expose our homes to more moisture than our air conditioning unit can remove before each cycle ends. that is why a whole home dehumidifier can greatly increase our comfort and health, while helping us by reducing our utility overpayment.

if your home is built over a crawlspace or basement, then a dehumidifier combined with a properly installed vapor barrier is a must have item to reduce the growth of mold and mildew.

high humidity is the leading cause of mold and mildew growth in a home, causing health concerns such as increased asthma and allergy issues.

let's take a look at winter

The most common issues we see in our homes are;

  • increased growth of bacteria and viruses.
  • dry itchy skin.
  • dry mouth, nose, and throat.
  • bloody nose.
  • compromised immune sytem due to dry nasal cavity and mucus membranes.
  • static electricity.
  • frizzy hair.
  • damage to wood instruments, wood floors, and other items made from wood.
  • doors/windows that won’t open or close.
  • utility overpayment.

so what can you do?

install a humidifier to relieve dryness and a dehumidifier to reduce moisture.

What’s in your basement?

Not sure?

Give us a call and we’ll help take the mystery out of it all.
